Hillscore

Tracked politicians

Hillscore follows every House member with ten or more disclosed stock purchases in five years, read from their own filings, plus the senators our data feed covers. It is a rule applied to everyone rather than a list anybody chose: not party, not seniority, and not how often a member trades.

Each page below shows that member's disclosed trades, priced against real market data, with their Composite score — the average return of every disclosed buy over the last five years. How coverage is chosen, or the best and worst stock traders in Congress for who comes out on top.

1 month, 3 months, 12 months: the average return of each member's buys at that point after purchase. A position sold between checkpoints (1 week, 1, 3, 6 and 12 months) counts at each checkpoint it was still held for, then at its sale price in the first checkpoint after the sale, and in none after that. Hover over a figure to see how many buys it rests on. How these are measured. Trades scored: priced buys from the last five years, the ones every figure in this table is built from. Older trades still appear on each member's page. vs sector (3 months): what the stocks a member bought did over the 3 months after each purchase, minus their sector ETF over the same period — the same measure as the research, so it counts every buy whether or not it was later sold. Unaligned, Notable and Cluster vs ETFs: how each group of a member's trades has done over the last five years against the same money, on the same dates, held in each stock's sector ETF — time-weighted, and where the lines on the second chart of each member's page end today. Notable trades are in a sector one of the member's own committees oversees; Unaligned trades have no committee overlap. Cluster: A buy is marked Cluster when at least one other tracked member of Congress bought the same stock within 30 days of it, regardless of committee membership. These columns leave out mega-caps. How the tags work. A dash means the group has fewer than five positions. Shading marks a group more than 25 points ahead of (green) or behind (red) its ETFs; stronger shading, more than 40.

Tracked, not yet ranked

A member needs at least 10 priced trades before being ranked, so a score built on a handful of trades is never set against one built on hundreds. Members below that are listed with their current count. Where a member has none at all, it is usually a known gap in the source data, documented on the methodology page.
